 Iswar Chandra Charitable Trust

Our Actions
Can Change the World

Iswar Chandra Charitable Trust was established by Puspendu Kumar Das, Balaram Karan and Dilip Kumar Maity.

Three of us knew each other for a while. We have been pondering for a long time what can we do together to serve the society at large without seeking any profit for ourselves in that endeavour. One of us, Puspendu Kumar Das retired recently from the Indian Institute of Science as a Professor and now he has the time to work fully toward a purpose. Another one of us, Balaram Karan has been running a successful NGO called Antyoday Anath Ashram (an orphanage and much more) for the past 30 years and he is highly knowledgeable about dealing with various problems met by common people in the country. The third person, Dilip Kumar Maity is a highly motivated school teacher who wants to spend his spare time after school duty for the benefit of the society around him. Our scattered thoughts culminated at the creation of a Charitable Trust whose aim and objective are to create opportunities for the marginalized population of the country.

LOCATION

The office of the Trust is located in the village named Paushi in the East Medinipur district of West Bengal. It is approximately 20 km south of Contai which is the nearest big town to Paushi. A small but vibrant river named Bagda is flowing by the southern side of the Paushi village and it is said that when the British came here about 250 years ago, they came via the Bagda river by small canoes called “pansi” in bengali, and thus the name of the village became Paushi distorted a bit by British accent of the time.  The village has a population of about 2000 and it hosts the most prominent orphanage of the region named Antyoday Anath Ashram (https://antyodoy.org/). Most of the population is engaged in farming and fisheries. Not very far from Paushi there is another village named Dariapur.  Dariapur is named after Daria Khan who was a step brother of the then ruler of Hijli kingdom named Taj Khan. The Portugese voyagers came to Bengal via the Rasulpur river which flows through Dariapur. The natural beauty of the place where Rasulpur river meets the Ganges and the forest on the bunk of the river is fabulous. In the 19th century the famous literary person, Sri Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay came here as the Deputy Collector of Contai sub-Division and stayed near Dariapur. He was dumb stuck by the beauty of the place and its surroundings. He wrote his famous Bengali novel Kapalkundala here where he has cited the Rasulpur River, Dariapur village, etc.

Now Paushi is well connected by tar road to Argoal in one side and Kalinagar on the other side. Kalinagar and Argoal are both connected to all important towns and cities of West Bengal by road. Two of us (BK and DKM) are born and brought up in  Paushi. All things considered Paushi seemed ideal as the working place of the Trust.

We believe that we can make a difference
